Mateo Rosiles is a government and public policy reporter and photojournalist for the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal, part of the USA Today Network, where he leads local coverage of city, county, and state governments, multiple school boards, and the Texas Tech University System Board of Regents. He also closely tracks the actions of state and federal lawmakers representing the region.

Before stepping into this role, Mateo served as the paper’s breaking news and special projects reporter. He specialized in in-depth coverage of rural healthcare, agriculture, higher education, and investigative reporting. He also helped modernize the paper’s digital storytelling through multimedia initiatives, including podcast production and a revitalized visual identity on social media. His portfolio includes spearheading the newspaper’s special section on the Texas Tech Centennial Celebration.

He began his career at The Daily Toreador, the university’s student newspaper, where he worked his way up to Editor-in-Chief in less than two years where he led a newsroom of student journalists and served as a liaison between student media and university administration.

Passionate about impactful local journalism and newsroom leadership, Mateo blends deep reporting experience with a keen eye for visual storytelling.
